Steady Miles Through 20, Then a Fight to the Finish Garrison Theroux completed the marathon in 3:51:22. He moved through the opening miles briskly, clicking off a 7:46 first mile and holding in the 8:10-8:30 range through mile 18, keeping his cumulative pace tight between 8:15 and 8:25 min/mile for the bulk of the race. Miles 21-26 brought a clear shift, with splits settling into the 9:57-10:20 min/mile range as the cumulative pace drifted out to 8:49 by the finish. His strongest stretch came early: miles 9 through 11 averaged just over 8:00 min/mile, the fastest sustained running of his race. That effort banked time that helped cushion the later miles. The marathon's final stretch runs past Boulder Reservoir and Boulder County backroads before finishing on the Pearl Street Mall, all above 5,000 feet of elevation, a backdrop worth noting given the pace he carried into the closing miles.
