Strong Start Fuels Steady Half Marathon Finish Zhaohua Zhang covered the half marathon in 1:42:42, averaging 7:50 per mile across the 13.1-mile course. The opening six miles were the highlight of the race, clicking off at roughly 7:16 per mile through the 43:39 mark, a pace well ahead of his overall average. From there, per-mile splits eased into the 8:00s, with the final mile settling at an 8:04 pace, showing a race built on a fast early rhythm rather than a late surge. Racing at altitude in Boulder, which sits above 5,000 feet, adds extra difficulty to holding sub-7:20 pace for six straight miles. Zhang might consider distributing effort more evenly in future outings to see if he can carry that early speed further into the back half.
