Strong Finish Fuels a Steady Half Marathon Will Thrush covered the Boulderthon half marathon in 1:49:45, an 8:22 min/mile pace. He paced the race evenly through the middle miles, holding between 8:13 and 8:41 per mile from mile 2 through mile 11, before dropping his fastest mile of the day, 7:57, in the final stretch to close strong. That late surge, following a 8:01 twelfth mile, marked his best sustained running of the race and pulled his overall elapsed pace down to 8:21 min/mile by the finish. Running at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, Thrush's ability to negative-split the closing miles stands out. Given how consistent his pacing was across the first ten miles, he might consider experimenting with a slightly faster early rhythm in a future race to see if that closing strength can be applied earlier on the course.
