His pace held remarkably steady through the middle miles, with splits between 6:00 and 6:15 per mile from the first mile through mile five, before a natural settling in the closing mile brought his overall pace to 6:25 per mile. His strongest stretch came in miles one through three, covered in 18:13 at a 6:04 per mile pace, the fastest sustained running of his race. That early rhythm built a cushion that carried him to the finish. Given that Boulder sits above 5,000 feet, Kaplan might consider whether easing slightly into the opening miles could preserve even more strength for the closing stretch in future races here.
