Fast Start, Steady Grind Home James Beals finished the half marathon in 1:50:46, an overall pace of 8:27 per mile through downtown Boulder and out toward Boulder County's backroads before returning to the Pearl Street Mall. He opened aggressively, covering the first mile in 6:52, then settled into a steady rhythm as the race progressed. That opening mile, run at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, stands as the fastest mile of his race. From there his pace lengthened gradually through mile 9, reaching 9:14, before he found another gearposting an 8:55 mile 10 and a strong 8:14 mile 12 to close out the back stretch. The mix of an early breakaway pace and late surges made for a race shaped more by variation than consistency, with his finishing miles showing he still had plenty left in reserve.
