Strong Middle Mile Powers Steady 5K Finish Kevin Penner covered the 5K in 26:21, moving through downtown Boulder with a pace that shifted noticeably across the three miles. He opened in 8:29, surged to a race-best 7:26 in the second mile, then eased to 9:29 over the closing stretch to the Pearl Street Mall finish. That middle mile stands out as the highlight of the race, dropping his cumulative pace to 7:57 per mile before the final mile settled the overall average to 8:30. Racing through Boulder, which sits above 5,000 feet of elevation, Penner's early pace control set up that strong second-mile push. A slightly more even split between miles two and three could help sustain that speed through the finish next time.
