Strong Middle Mile Powers a Solid 5K Finish Emily Ekstrum finished the 2026 Boulderthon 5K in 30:01, covering the field of 2,677 entrants at an overall pace of 9:41 per mile. Her race built from a 10:04 opening mile to a sharp 8:24 second mile, then eased back to 10:24 to close. That middle mile stood out as her fastest stretch of the day, showing a strong surge before settling in for the final push. Running through downtown Boulder a city sitting above 5,000 feet and known as National Geographic's Happiest City in America Ekstrum finished on the historic Pearl Street Mall. With this pacing pattern, she might consider working toward a steadier third mile to carry that second-mile strength through to the finish.
