His opening mile came in at 9:11, and he then quickened to 8:19 for the second mile, pulling his cumulative pace down to 8:44 per mile through two miles. The final mile slowed to 11:41, pushing his overall pace to 9:46 per mile at the finish. That second mile stands out as the strongest stretch of his race, nearly a minute faster than his closing mile. With Boulder sitting above 5,000 feet, that early pace made for a solid foundation dialing back the closing effort slightly could help him carry that mile-two rhythm through to the finish next time.
