Mendoza opened fast, covering the first mile in 5:17 and holding a 5:24 cumulative pace through two miles before easing over the closing stretch, finishing with a 6:01 elapsed pace. That opening mile stood as his strongest of the race. Racing at over 5,000 feet of altitude in downtown Boulder, Mendoza's early pace set the tone for a finish squarely among the field's fastest.
