Strong Second Mile Powers a Podium Finish Luanne Burke finished her 5K in 27:52, an 8:59 min/mile pace, placing second in the F65-69 division out of the field of 2,677. Her race built steadily: a 9:33 opening mile settled into a strong second-mile surge, then eased back over the final stretch to the finish. That middle mile stood out a 7:29 split, nearly a minute and a half faster than her opening pace, and the fastest stretch of her race. Given that Boulder sits above 5,000 feet, sustaining that kind of push mid-race speaks well of her pacing instincts. Coming off a half marathon at last year's Boulderthon, Burke showed she can also handle a shorter, sharper test a mile-two split like this suggests real potential if she builds toward carrying it further next time.
