Negative Splits Power a Strong Finish Jonas Scholz completed the 5K in 26:01, an average pace of 8:23 per mile. His race built steadily: a 9:31 opening mile gave way to a 7:59 second mile, then a 7:47 closing mile, the fastest mile of his race and nearly two minutes faster than his start. Running at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, Scholz's pattern of continual acceleration through the back half of the course stands out. Where his opening mile trailed the field, his final two miles moved him up significantly by the finish. Building on that opening mile could offer more room to negative split even further in a future race.
