A Strong Middle Mile Powers a Steady 5K Finish Larry Kong completed the 2026 Boulderthon 5K in 29:49, an overall pace of 9:37 per mile. He opened with a 10:06 first mile, then surged to 8:12 through mile twohis fastest stretch of the racebefore settling back to 10:25 over the closing mile. That middle-mile push reshaped his day, pulling his cumulative pace down before the final mile brought it back up slightly by the finish. Racing at over 5,000 feet of elevation in downtown Boulder, Kong's ability to find another gear mid-race stands out. Building on that surge earlier in the race, rather than saving it for the finish, could be worth exploring in future 5Ks.
