Steady Start Gives Way to a Grinding Back Half Riley Herriman finished the marathon in 5:06:58, an overall pace of 11:42 per mile. His early miles were the most consistent stretch of the race: from mile 1 through mile 8, he held between 9:43 and 11:46 per mile, keeping cumulative pace under 10:30 through the first quarter. That opening tempo eased through the middle miles, with cumulative pace settling near 10:50 by mile 20, before tapering further over the closing miles. Boulder sits above 5,000 feet, context worth noting for that pacing arc. The marathon course runs out past Boulder Reservoir and along Boulder County backroads before returning downtown to finish on the Pearl Street Mall. Within that stretch, Herriman's mile 12 split of 9:42 stood out as his fastest full mile of the race, a rebound after a rough patch around miles 8 and 9.
