Steady Early Miles Give Way to a Hard-Fought Finish Michael Schaffner completed the half marathon in 3:15:34, opening with his strongest running of the day: a 13:09 average pace through the first three miles. From there his pace settled into the 14- to 16-minute range, dipping to 16:48 by mile 11 before he found another gear, trimming back to 15:27 for mile 12 and closing out with a 15:42 final mile into downtown Boulder. The finish on the historic Pearl Street Mall capped a race run at altitude, with Boulder sitting more than 5,000 feet above sea level. Given the steady early pace and late rally, Schaffner might look to smooth the middle miles next time to carry that opening rhythm further into the race.
