Strong Middle Mile Carries a Steady 5K Finish Layne Garrelts crossed the line in 51:17 for the 5K. She opened with a 12:22 first mile, then found her best rhythm over the second mile, clocking 11:00 to bring her cumulative pace down to 11:40 per mile. The closing mile slowed considerably, pushing her final overall pace to 16:32 per mile as she came home into downtown Boulder. That second mile stands out as the highlight of her race, the fastest stretch of the day and a clear surge in tempo before the finish. Running at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet adds a layer of difficulty to any pace, and her ability to accelerate mid-race under those conditions is a strong sign of fitness worth building on for future starts.
