Strong Pacing Secures a Top Finish and Division Win David Cardenas finished the half marathon in 1:12:42, placing 12th overall and 12th among men out of the field of 7,223, and won his 25-29 age division. He opened with a 5:23 first mile, held a tight 5:22-5:34 rhythm through the middle miles, and closed with a strong 5:21 twelfth mile, his fastest of the race, before finishing at a 5:32 average pace. The race unfolded steadily, with a brief softening between miles 7 and 8 (5:44, 5:53) before he tightened back up over the final five miles. That late surge, capped by the 5:21 split, points to well-managed effort across a course that finishes on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, at over 5,000 feet of elevation a demanding backdrop for holding sub-5:35 miles late in a half marathon.
