Her race built through a clear middle surge: an opening mile at 10:28 gave way to a much stronger second mile at 8:09, the fastest mile of her race, before easing back to 10:14 over the closing stretch to the finish. Racing at over 5,000 feet of elevation, Mitzalis's pacing shows a runner who found her rhythm once warmed up. Finishing on the Pearl Street Mall, she might look to carry that second-mile strength further into the final stretch next time, extending the pace she found once she hit her stride.
