Strong Start Gives Way to a Gritty Final Mile James Sandoval finished the 10K in 59:28, an average pace of 9:35 per mile across the 6.2-mile course. His race opened fast, with back-to-back miles at 8:43 and 8:46, before the pace eased through the middle miles, bottoming out at 10:02 for mile four. He found another gear for mile five, dropping back to 9:31, before the final mile stretched out to 11:22 on the way into downtown Boulder. That opening pair of miles was the highlight of the day, the fastest sustained running of the race by a clear margin. Sandoval's 10K began at 8:10 AM, with the finish coming on the historic Pearl Street Mall a course run out at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet.
