Negative-Split Marathon Capped by a Fast Closing Mile Elliot Murphy finished the marathon in 4:14:32, an overall pace of 9:42 per mile. He opened conservatively, settling into an 11:40 per-mile pace through the first three miles, then steadily chipped away at that number. From mile 9 through mile 22 he strung together mile after mile in the 8:309:40 range, pulling his cumulative pace down to 9:49 by mile 24. He saved his best for last, closing with an 8:06 split over the final mile his fastest mile of the race as he made his way into downtown Boulder. Boulder sits above 5,000 feet of elevation, useful context for a race that ended with that kind of closing speed. That final surge carried him onto the historic Pearl Street Mall, where every Boulderthon distance finishes.
