Fast Middle Mile Fuels a Top-10% Finish Finishing in 25:25 for the 5K, this 51-year-old runner placed 257th overall out of the field of 2,677, a top-10% result. The race opened with an 8:03 first mile, then surged to a 6:58 second mile the fastest mile of the day before easing to roughly 8:43 pace over the final 1.1 miles into downtown Boulder. That middle-mile burst was the clear highlight of the effort, and even with the late settle, the overall pace held at 8:11 per mile. Racing at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, holding that strong middle mile speaks well to pacing instincts; dialing back the early mile slightly could leave a bit more in reserve to extend that surge next time.
