Fast Start Fades Late in the 5K Lauren Franklin covered the opening mile in 9:41 before clicking off her fastest mile of the race, an 8:29 second mile that brought her cumulative pace down to 9:04 per mile through two miles. The final stretch slowed considerably, with the third mile taking 31:54, pushing her overall time to 51:18. The race's shape tells the story: a strong, controlled first two miles followed by a steep drop-off over the closing mile. That early pace, especially the second-mile split, is worth carrying forward as a benchmark for what she's capable of holding longer. Like every distance at this year's Boulderthon, the race finished on the historic Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder, a fitting close to a day that started fast.
