Strong Middle Mile Powers a Top-10% Finish Preston Bergeron crossed the 5K in 25:04, good for 240th overall and 181st among men out of the field of 2,677 a result inside the top 10 percent. His race built momentum through the middle of the course before settling in for the close. After an opening mile of 8:20, Bergeron surged to a 7:08 second mile, his fastest stretch of the race, before easing to 8:55 over the final mile to finish with an overall pace of 8:05 per mile. That early surge did the heavy lifting for his time, and finishing near sea-level-trained paces at over 5,000 feet in Boulder speaks well of his effort. A touch more even pacing between miles two and three could help him carry that strong middle-mile speed all the way to the line next time.
