Steady Middle Miles Fuel a Strong Closing Kick Will Gerdes finished the marathon in 4:13:23, averaging 9:40 per mile across the 26.2mile course. He opened with a 9:38 first mile, then settled into a rhythm in the 9:159:45 range through the middle miles, highlighted by a racebest 8:43 split in mile five. The pace eased in miles 2125, drifting into the 10:4511:45 range, before he closed strong with an 8:57 final mile to the line. That late stretch came as the course carried runners out past Boulder Reservoir and along the county backroads before turning back toward downtown Boulder, with every distance finishing on the historic Pearl Street Mall. Sustaining that effort through the closing miles was no small feat given Boulders elevation above 5,000 feet, and Gerdes ability to rally in the final mile reflected well on his overall pacing plan.
