Steady Pacing Powers a Top-40 Marathon Finish Andy Altepeter finished the marathon in 3:15:32, placing 39th overall and 33rd among men in a field of 3,305. He moved through the opening 10 miles at a brisk, even clip near 7:107:20 per mile, held that rhythm through the middle miles, and absorbed a rougher patch in the low-to-mid 20s before closing with renewed strength over the final miles into downtown Boulder. His sharpest sustained stretch came from mile 9 to mile 13, covered in just under 36 minutes an average of about 7:10 per mile, the fastest multi-mile segment of his race. That effort came at Boulder's altitude of over 5,000 feet, adding weight to the pace he sustained through the early-and-mid race miles before the late slowdown and strong final push to the finish.
