Steady Pace Sharpens Into a Strong Closing Kick Scott Johnson covered the half marathon in 1:52:42, an 8:36 min/mile average, finishing 64th in the M40-44 division. His mile splits stayed remarkably consistent through the middle miles, hovering between 8:28 and 8:55, before he found another gear over the final stretch. From mile 9 to the finish, he covered four miles in 33:44 an 8:26 min/mile pace with mile 12 standing out as his fastest of the race at 8:09. That closing surge came as runners passed near the lululemon Power-Up Zone around mile 9.5, and Johnson used the momentum well, tightening his pace rather than fading. The finish on the historic Pearl Street Mall capped a well-paced effort at Boulder's mile-high altitude, where holding form late is no small feat.
