Strong Start Gives Way to a Tough Back Stretch William Laird finished the marathon in 4:12:11, an average pace of 9:37 per mile. His race shape was a story of two halves: he opened briskly and held a cumulative pace under 9:10 per mile through mile 18, but the final eight miles brought a steady fade, with splits sliding into the 10:00-11:00 range as fatigue set in over the closing miles. His sharpest running came early, covering the first three miles in 25:19 an 8:26 per mile average, the fastest stretch of his race. That early rhythm couldn't be sustained at altitude, with Boulder sitting above 5,000 feet, and by the approach to the lululemon Power-Up Zone near mile 22.5, his mile split had slowed to 11:09 before he found a bit more life in the final miles to the Pearl Street Mall finish.
