Early Pace Holds Firm Before a Strong Closing Rally Douglas Barton completed the half marathon in 2:43:04. He opened with a 10:23 first mile and held under an 11:00 pace through five miles, keeping his cumulative pace near 10:47. The middle miles slowed steadily, cumulative pace easing to 12:17 by mile 10, before he tightened back up over the final three miles, closing with a 12:04 last mile. His opening five miles were the strongest stretch of the race, sustained comfortably under an 11:00-per-mile pace before the second half's gradual fade. Racing at Boulder's elevation of over 5,000 feet, that early consistency stands out against the terrain's demands through downtown Boulder toward the finish on the Pearl Street Mall.
