Significant Improvement Shown in Challenging Conditions Jason Smith from Colorado Springs completed the 2025 Pikes Peak Ascent, a half marathon race, in 3:24:52 over a distance of 13.36 miles, achieving an elevated pace of 15:20 min/mile. This time places him 135th overall out of 2049 participants and 11th in his division, O40-44. When compared to his 2024 performance in the same race, Jason improved markedly, reducing his elapsed time by around 13 minutes. Examining Jason's race splits shows initial strength with a quick first mile, achieving an 8:09 pace at Ruxton. As expected, his pace slowed as he climbed in elevation, with the steepest three miles averaging over a 20:00 min/mile pace due to the high altitude. Despite the difficulty as he advanced above the tree line, Jason showed consistency, maintaining a competitive position within his division. Continuing to focus on strategies that enhance pace under varying terrain and elevation changes could benefit future races.
