Strong Bike Split Fuels a Steady Olympic-Distance Finish Sterling posted a swim of 28:15, transitioned in 6:27, then turned in the standout segment of the day: a 1:29:54 bike leg averaging roughly 16.3 mph over the Olympic-distance course. That effort moved him up significantly in the field, climbing to 682nd overall by the midway point of the bike from 1170th after the swim a clear sign of where his strength lies. The run proved tougher sledding, with pacing slowing progressively across the final miles, settling into a 1:28:19 split for the leg. T2 took 8:30, and his overall placement dipped slightly during the run relative to the ground gained on the bike. For Sterling, sharpening run fitness particularly maintaining pace in the back half looks like the clearest path to unlocking an even stronger overall finish next time out, building on that bike performance as a strong foundation.
