Consistency Takes a Hit, but Finishing Speed Shines William Allen completed his fourth Spudman Olympic Triathlon in 3:20:19, a step back from his three previous appearances, which ranged from 2:51:56 to 3:04:27 and had improved each year. This time, the swim and bike proved tougher, with the bike leg averaging roughly 14.3 mph noticeably slower than his prior efforts on two wheels. Still, the run told a different story. William negative-split the back half of the course, surging from a 10:47 mile pace to 9:28, then closing with an 18-second dash at a 3:08 pace to the line. That kind of finishing kick after a demanding bike segment speaks to solid run fitness. Sharpening bike execution could be the key to returning to his sub-3-hour form at next year's Spudman.
