Mid-Race Surge Highlights a Steady Sprint Debut Matthew's race showed real strength on the bike, where he cranked out a stretch near 12 mph and climbed as high as 70th in his gender field by the midpoint of the ride a solid surge from his 170th-place position exiting the swim. That momentum cooled slightly by the bike's final miles, as he settled into 187th for the discipline, suggesting some pace management could help him sustain those early gains longer. The run told a similar story of promise and fade: Matthew charged into 49th among men through the first two run splits, a big jump up the field, before easing back to finish 181st overall in his gender and 36th in the 13-19 age group.
