Strong Bike Surge Powers a Solid Olympic Effort John Garrard finished the Olympic-distance race in 2:50:11, placing 316th overall out of 1,987 finishers and 10th in a stacked 55-59 age group. After a swim of 24:49, he moved into a standout bike leg, covering the roughly 24.4-mile course in 1:18:35 an average of about 18.6 mph. Mid-ride, he surged to as high as 3rd in his division, hitting stretches near 20 mph before settling back into the pack by the bike finish. The run told a different story. His opening mile clicked off at a strong 8:44, but the pace steadily slipped, reaching just over 10:00 per mile by mile three before a determined final push to the line, closing out a 59:55 run split. With such a powerful bike leg already in hand, working on sustaining that early run rhythm could help him convert mid-race position gains into an even stronger overall finish next time.
