Elite Bike Speed Fuels Early Lead Before a Run Fade Lily Apedaile opened her Olympic-distance race with a strong 20:05 swim, good for 2nd among Elite Women, before a swift 2:38 T1 got her onto the bike. She rode aggressively there, averaging roughly 20.4 mph, which vaulted her into the overall Elite Women's lead by the first bike checkpoint a position she held all the way through a quick 1:50 T2. The run told a different story. Her opening mile clocked a sharp 9:11, but the pace steadily slipped into the 1113 minute range over the back half, dropping her from 1st to 6th in her division and to 39th among all women by the finish (2:46:15, 252nd overall of 1,987). Sharpening run endurance and pacing could help her carry that bike-built lead further into the run next time.
