Strong Bike Surge Undone by a Fading Finish Bill posted a total time of 2:39:26, highlighted by a bike leg that saw him hammer out roughly 20 mph over the course, a segment strong enough to put him inside the top 10 of his age division at multiple checkpoints. His swim was steady and set up a clean transition into the bike, where his real strength on this day showed up, climbing from 85th to as high as 4th in his division before settling into the mid-30s by the dismount. The run told a different story. After exiting T2 in a strong position, his pace steadily slipped, particularly over the middle third, where he lost significant ground both overall and within his division. Compared to his 2022 (2:32:41) and 2023 (2:25:21) Spudman finishes, this result marks his slowest of the three, driven largely by that late run fade. With his bike fitness clearly trending in the right direction, targeted work on sustaining run pace off the bike could be the key to matching that improved bike strength with a stronger finish next time.
