Strong Bike Leg Powers a Big Year-Over-Year Improvement Austin Campbell returned to Spudman and turned in a notably faster race, finishing in 1:48:23 compared to his 1:52:08 the previous year nearly a four-minute gain. That improvement helped him climb significantly in the standings, moving from 205th to 134th overall and from 113th to 82nd among men in a field of 570 finishers. The bike was clearly Austin's strongest leg, where he averaged just under 14.8 mph, a pace that pushed him into the top third of his age group at the dismount line. His swim and transitions were efficient and consistent with his overall pacing strategy. The run proved to be the area with the most room to close the gap on those ahead of him, as his position slipped slightly over the final miles. Sharpening run fitness could be the next step toward an even stronger finish at next year's race.
