Bike Strength Highlights a Hard-Fought Olympic Finish Miles Paulson turned in a strong all-around effort at this year's Olympic-distance event, anchored by an outstanding bike leg. After a steady swim that moved him up from 1,484th to 1,036th overall, Miles turned in a bike split averaging roughly 21.4 mph, propelling him from 976th to 161st overall by the dismount line one of the most notable surges of his race. The run proved tougher, as his pace settled near 11:52 per mile, and his overall position slipped from 179th to 425th by the finish. Compared to his 2:28:46 finish at last year's Spudman, this year's 2:53:50 marks a step back, largely tied to the run leg. With such a strong bike foundation, sharpening run fitness could be the key to unlocking an even more well-rounded performance next time out.
