Strong Mid-Bike Surge Gives Way to a Fading Run Alex Marcum completed the Olympic-distance Spudman Triathlon in 4:15:55, finishing 117th in the Men's 30-34 division. His swim was steady, exiting the water in 28:47, and he showed real strength on the bike, particularly during a mid-course stretch where he covered 5.6 miles at roughly 16 mph his fastest segment of the day and a big jump from his overall bike average near 14 mph. The back half of the race proved tougher. After a solid transition into the run, his pace steadily declined over the 10K, moving from an opening mile near 15:49 to splits well past 16:00 and 19:00 per mile later on. Building more durability for the run leg, especially in the final miles, could help him carry his bike-leg strength through to the finish in future races.
