Powerful Bike Leg Fuels a Hard-Fought Olympic Finish Vance King, 43, of Rexburg, ID, completed the Olympic-distance race at Spudman in 3:37:01, placing 1101st overall out of 1,987 finishers and 822nd among men. His bike leg stood out, averaging roughly 14.5 mph over the nearly 25-mile course, with an especially strong opening stretch that had him inside the top 600 in his division at the first checkpoint. The run told a different story Vance opened at a brisk 9:06 mile pace but steadily slowed, dipping past 13:00 per mile by mile 30 before rallying for a strong finishing kick. Transitions were efficient, with T2 completed in well under four minutes. Building run-specific endurance and practicing pacing strategies off the bike could help him sustain his early run tempo deeper into future races.
