Bike Strength Powers a Steady Olympic-Distance Effort Jacob Sheffield delivered a well-balanced Olympic-distance performance, anchored by an especially strong bike leg. He covered the roughly 24-mile course in 1:22:22, averaging nearly 17.8 mph, and surged as high as 18th in his age group during a fast middle stretch where he held over 19 mph a big jump from his 112th-place standing off the swim. Off the bike, Jacob settled into a run pace in the 10:30s per mile, completing the run in just over an hour. Both transitions were tight, each under four and a half minutes, helping keep his overall race efficient. He crossed the finish in 2:57:45, placing 56th among 30-34 solo men. Focusing on maintaining a bit more consistency in the closing miles of the run could help him convert that bike strength into an even stronger finish next time.
